CODING PIRATES

Martin Exner has established the volunteer association Coding Pirates helping children to develop their IT skills and to become creators of IT instead of merely consumers.

Problem

In Denmark, youths have limited access to resources for learning about information technology. They receive no guidance from IT professionals and do not have access to a network to share their interest in IT. In addition, most teachers do not currently consider this field of expertise important. As a result, youths become passive consumers of IT-products and miss out on opportunities to develop their IT skills and participate in shaping the field at a global level.

Solution

Martin Exner is working on a free, creative, and inspiring workshops that encourage youths to explore IT products and develop IT competencies in a playful way. The workshops offer an explorative way of instructing, learning, and developing IT products. The community is both digital and physical, expanding across age, gender, and demographics. The vision of Coding Pirates is that all children who dream of participating in the creative development and programming of IT can realize their dreams.
